The 2020 Toyota 86 is a lightweight coupe offered in three trim levels, which are 86, 86 GT, and 86 Hakone Edition. From the outside, this sleek two-door model showcases an aggressive front end with a large lower grille, an oversized rear spoiler, and eye-catching sporty elements. Standard features on the base model include 17-inch twisted-spoke alloy wheels, LED headlights, daytime running lights, and taillights, specialized front fender badges, a dual chrome-tipped exhaust, and front fender-mounted vortex generators.

The mid-level 86 GT tacks on an aerodynamic underbody panel, heated side mirrors, LED fog lights, 18-inch split-spoke alloy wheels with upgraded sport tires, and a matte black rear wing with aerodynamic endplates. With the top 86 Hakone Edition, you get 17-inch bronze-colored wheels and a trim-exclusive green paint job. Some of the trims are also offered with upgraded SACHS performance dampers and Brembo brakes.

All three trims come standard with a 2.0-liter flat four-cylinder engine, although the output depends on the trim level and its transmission pairing. With the base six-speed manual transmission, the engine puts out 205 horsepower and 156 pound-feet of torque. The optional six-speed automatic transmission drops the output slightly to 200 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque.

The handling and precision on the 2020 Toyota 86 put this model near the top of its segment - and it's competing with models that are quite a bit more expensive. Toyota markets this stylish model as a track-tested, road-approved vehicle, so you can take it around tight corners with ease. It also boasts accurate and responsive steering. With the manual transmission, the vehicle went from zero to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds in speed testing. The automatic transmission does slow down the acceleration slightly. All trim levels come standard with rear-wheel drive.

Within the cabin of the base trim, you'll find cloth upholstery, single-zone manual climate control, power locks and windows, remote keyless entry, and a multi-information display screen. Ride in luxury with a leather-trimmed steering wheel with contrasting stitching, sport front bucket seats with side bolsters, and faux-suede accents. An eight-speaker sound system, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration, a 7-inch touch screen, and Bluetooth connectivity also come standard on the tech side.

The 86 GT adds a few comfort upgrades, such as additional faux-suede accents and seat upholstery, faux-leather knee support cushions, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated sport seats, an upgraded steering wheel, a larger multi-information display screen, and a leather-wrapped shift knob.

Every 2020 Toyota 86 comes with a rearview camera, stability and traction control, six airbags mounted throughout the cabin, and a tire pressure monitoring system. The stability control system also includes a track mode setting, allowing you to adjust the feel when you're taking this sporty ride around a racetrack.
