The Toyota 4Runner sets itself apart from other mid-size SUVs with its pickup truck frame and off-road abilities. It also comes with either rear or four-wheel drive and has a strong V-6 engine. For the 2023 model year, a 40th Anniversary Special Edition joins the lineup with bronze wheels on the outside and bronze accents in the cabin. Trim Levels
The SR5 starts the 4Runner lineup with 17-inch wheels, roof rails, LED headlights, LED fog lights, heated and power-adjustable side exterior mirrors, and underbody skid plates. The TRD Sport adds 20-inch wheels, a hood scoop, and an off-road-tuned suspension, while the SR5 Premium offers the option for a sunroof. The 40th Anniversary Special Edition comes with a special grille, bronze 17-inch wheels, and a sunroof.
Step up to the TRD Off-Road or the TRD Off-Road Premium for a locking rear differential, and if you choose the Limited, you'll get 20-inch wheels, chrome exterior trim elements, and a sunroof. The TRD Pro comes with a TRD roof rack, a front skid plate, TRD wheels, and off-road suspension.
Engine
Every 2023 4Runner gets power from a 4.0-liter V-6 gas engine. It generates 270 horsepower and works with either rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive in all trims except the TRD Pro, TRD Off-Road, and 40th Anniversary Edition. These models come standard with four-wheel drive.
Performance
The driving position in the 4Runner is high, giving the driver a good view of the road around them. The ride stays soft and comfortable on the road, but this SUV shines when you take it off the beaten path. It will also power through snow and mud with enthusiasm.
Interior
The standard configuration in the 4Runner has room for five, but there's an optional third row if you need more seating. It comes standard with a power-adjustable driver's seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and reclining and folding second-row seats. The TRD Sport adds TRD interior trim, simulated leather upholstery, and heated front seats, and you'll also get these along with a power-adjustable passenger seat in the SR5 Premium. The Limited comes with leather upholstery and ventilated front seats.
Technology in the 4Runner starts with an 8-inch touch screen that houses Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 120-volt power outlet, two 12-volt power outlets, Amazon Alexa, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. You'll get an 8-inch touch screen in the SR5 Premium, integrated navigation, and an upgraded JBL stereo system in the Limited.
Safety Features
Every 2023 4Runner has several advanced driver aids as part of the Toyota Safety Sense P suite. These include adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic braking, lane-departure warning with sway warning, pedestrian detection, and a blind-spot warning system with rear cross-traffic alert. It also includes automated high-beam headlights and adaptive cruise control. The Limited adds front and rear parking sensors and a 360-degree surround-view camera system.
