2021 RAV4 vs 2021 RAV4 Hybrid in Chesapeake, VA

The Toyota RAV4 is an SUV that’s incredibly popular with families and commuters alike. And with more trim levels than ever before, there’s a choice for every type of driver! When comparing the gas-powered and hybrid versions, which one comes out on top? Read on to learn how the 2021 RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid compare to each other, so you can choose which is the best fit for you!

Off-Road Trim Packages

If you enjoy trips off the beaten path, the clear choice is the gas-powered RAV4. All 6 of the available trims have the same capable engine. The RAV4 has an Adventure and TRD Off-Road trim options that are unavailable as a hybrid; both are equipped with dynamic torque-vectoring all-wheel drive. This system automatically distributes torque to the wheels that need it most in order to improve traction, stability, and cornering.

While each of these top-notch SUVs offer comparable gas engines, the Highlander is the stronger of the two. The 2021 4Runner boasts a 4.0-liter V-6 engine that produces 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque; it gets an EPA-estimated 16 mpg city and 19 mpg highway. Meanwhile, the 2021 Highlander has a 3.5-liter V-6 engine that puts out 295 horsepower and 263 pound-feet of torque, resulting in an EPA-estimated 21 mpg city and 29 mpg highway. In addition to more power, the new Highlander also offers a hybridized 243-horsepower powertrain that delivers strength and heightened efficiency.

The higher ground clearance on the Adventure and TRD Off-Road allows you to climb over obstacles no matter where you drive. The multi-terrain select dial includes options such as mud/sand, rock/dirt, snow, and normal. Each option sets the wheel spin, brake pressure, and throttle to provide unsurpassed traction. Downhill assist is also standard on these models.

The TRD Off-Road also includes a unique TRD-tuned independent MacPherson strut front suspension, a multi-link rear suspension, and unique shocks and struts. Properly equipped, the Adventure and TRD Off-Road each have a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 pounds. The RAV4 hybrid offers a maximum towing capacity of only 1,750 pounds.

The gas-powered RAV4 engine produces 184 pound-feet of torque compared to the hybrid's 163 pound-feet. Extra torque means extra power, especially when driving up inclines or carrying heavy cargo.

Handling and Performance

The RAV4 Hybrid offers 5 trim options, with the introduction of the XLE Premium trim now available. All trims sport the same 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors which produce 219 horsepower. In addition, RAV4 Hybrids come standard with a continuously variable transmission and all-wheel drive which supplies power to the rear wheels, granting you confidence while driving through any manner of weather.

The days of a hybrid underperforming compared to its gas-powered counterpart are over: this agile SUV can go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in an impressive 7.8 seconds! Also available on the RAV4 Hybrid are different drive modes to assist as you encounter any types of terrain: Eco mode to increase fuel efficiency, EV mode for short trips, Sport mode for a speed boost, and Trail mode for increased traction. And if none of these special modes are needed, Normal mode is ready to get you where you’re going!
