Great Bridge Battlefield Chesapeake has an incredible history as the site of several important battles that impacted the formation of the USA. There are plenty of great spots close to Chesapeake, VA, that provide ample opportunities for boat enthusiasts. Grab your gear, hop in your Toyota and head out to the Elizabeth River, Lynnhaven River, the Dismal Swamp Canal, Drummond Lake, and the Chesapeake Bay for the ultimate boating experience! 1. The Chesapeake Bay The Chesapeake Bay is roughly 200 miles long and stretches from Havre de Grace in Maryland to Virginia Beach, Virginia. The bay is a dream destination for boaters with small and large watercraft and offers plenty to do and to see with miles and miles of shoreline to explore by boat. more There are loads of boat ramps where you can launch your boat, the closest to Chesapeake being Lynnhaven Boat Ramp at 3576 Piedmont Circle in Virginia Beach. There are four concrete boat launch lanes and a launch for canoes and kayaks to the Lynnhaven River and the bay. You can also access the river and the bay at Lynnhaven Municipal Marina at 3211 Lynnhaven Drive. 2. The Lynnhaven River The Lynnhaven River is a tidal estuary and runs through the breathtaking First Landing State Park. Launch your motorboat, canoe, or kayak from the Narrows Boat Ramp at the 64th Street extension in the park. You can also use the Lynnhaven Inlet or Crab Creek Boat Ramp at E Stratford Road. Just follow the signs to the ramp on the left. 3. The Dismal Swamp Canal Explore the beautiful, forested wetlands of the 100,000-acre Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge down the Dismal Swamp Canal that flows through the refuge. The canal is 22 miles long with a depth of six feet and can accommodate watercraft up to 50 feet wide and 300 feet long. The Ballahack Boat Ramp at 3700 Dismal Swamp Canal Trail provides easy access to launch a small boat, canoe, or kayak. There is also a single boat launch at 1246 Dismal Swamp Canal Trail at the George Washington Highway South intersection. 4. Lake Drummond The 3,000-acre Lake Drummond is in the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge and is one of only two natural freshwater lakes in the state. The lake is also the main water supply for the Dismal Swamp Canal. It's a fantastic destination to go boating and even go on a cruise. Just sit back and drift on the water to enjoy the picturesque scenery. Use the feeder ditch off the Dismal Swamp Canal to access Lake Drummon or drive through the refuge to the boat ramp along Route 17, south of Deep Creek. 5. The Elizabeth River You don't have to drive far to enjoy a day on the water. Elizabeth River Park at 1400 Elizabeth River Way right here in Chesapeake has one of the most active boat ramps on the Elizabeth River. There is also a fishing pier and a Snack Shack. Great Bridge Lock Park at 100 Locks Road is another place with easy access to the river. There is a large parking lot for boats and a boat ramp with launches. Conveniently located just a short 3-hour road trip away in Woodbridge, VA, there are plenty of fun outdoor activities to enjoy! 1. Kayak to Featherstone National Wildlife Refuge Featherstone National Wildlife Refuge may be close to Woodbridge, but it feels a world away. That's because it's only accessible by non-motorized boat. Why not kayak to the refuge? You'll enjoy a beautiful journey over Neabsco Creek. more Once you reach the reserve itself, there are stunning wetlands and woodlands to enjoy. You're likely to spot a variety of wildlife, including ospreys, muskrats, beavers, woodpeckers, and a variety of waterfowl. Please note that there are no bathrooms or other facilities on the reserve. Be sure to bring plenty of water along to stay hydrated! 2. Take a Walk at Neabsco Regional Park This 300-acre park includes a great variety of natural, recreational, and historic features. Taking a stroll along the pleasant boardwalk, winding through wetland, meadow, and woodland, is a great way to benefit from some light exercise while taking in the local scenery. There are other points of interest in the park, including the Rippon Lodge Historic Site. An 18th-century plantation house, it's open to visitors from May through October on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 11am to 4pm. It's a great place to stop during your hike to learn more about the history of the local area. 3. Cycle Down the Anacostia River Trail Just a 40-minute drive from Woodbridge, Anacostia River Trail is a perfect place to enjoy cycling. Running for more than 20 miles, it's a smooth, asphalt trail taking in gorgeous views of the local area, including the RFK Stadium and Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens. With its wide, well-maintained surface and plenty of parking nearby, this is an easily accessible place for those of all abilities. 4. Spend a Night Under the Stars at Oak Ridge Campground There's no better way to appreciate nature than camping. One great way to get out into nature and get a full appreciation of the wildlife that our area is host to is to do some birdwatching. All sorts of these beautiful, feathered creatures can be found right here in and around our hometown. Check out these spots in Chesapeake, VA that each offer a great way to venture into the soothing outdoors without going too far from your own neighborhood. 1. Oak Grove Lake Park 65 acres of space for outdoor activities, including a 1.5-mile path that winds around the nearby lake, make Oak Grove Lake Park a lovely spot to enjoy the outdoors in our area. The dense canopy of trees overhead provides you with ample shade as you watch for the birds that frequent the lake. more 2. The park around Paradise Creek is also the perfect place to bring your dog for a walk, so take man's best friend out with you on your excursion to make the day even more enjoyable! 4. Great Bridge Lock Park This island park provides a unique environment for you to do some birding in, with great views of the bridge that spans the water nearby. There's also a boat ramp here, giving you the opportunity to go out on the water to get an even better view of the birds soaring overhead. 5.
