Winner of the Best of Norfolk for its creative seafood concoctions, 456 Fish isn't your average eatery. When you get to your table, start with an appetizer such as fried calamari, sesame seared tuna sashimi, or if you can't decide, the chef's sampler. Main dishes include crab-stuffed jumbo flounder, skillet-seared Atlantic salmon, or cashew-encrusted mahi-mahi. The best part here is that no matter what you choose, it's delicious. Captain Groovy's Grill & Raw Bar For the more laid-back experience, Captain Groovy's is a wharf-themed bar that provides casual seafood cuisine along with a bar and spacious patio. Freemason Abbey Restaurant Housed in a church built in 1873, Freemason Abbey Restaurant is one of the most interesting restaurant venues in Norfolk, if not the entire East Coast. Once you're seated, you'll enjoy looking at the stained glass and other decor that remains true to the building's original purpose. Each day, the restaurant features a catch of the day, which is freshly caught from the Chesapeake Bay. If you're looking for a three-course meal, start your journey with the famous She Crab Soup, which is a blend of lump crab meat and sherry. After you've gulped down every last drop of the soup, try the broiled seafood platter, which contains shrimp, scallops, mahi-mahi, and crab cakes, all garnished with rice and steamed asparagus. At that point, you probably won't have much room left in the tank, but if you want to push the issue, you simply have to try one of their delectable cheesecakes. If you'd like to go to the festival with seven or more of your friends, festival organizers allow advance table registrations for parties of eight or more. Pungo Ridge Winery Located in Virginia Beach, this winery opened a tasting room in 2011 after creating 50 cases of blackberry wine. After that, the establishment stuck with the fruity theme and still focuses on making wines with local fruits. Pungo Ridge Winery is perpetually popular and had to close until June 4 due to extraordinary demand. If you'd like to plan a trip there once operations resume, keep in mind there's a $5 tasting fee, and each glass of wine is $7. Furthermore, if you'd like to get a souvenir wine glass to remember your tasting forever, it's also $7. Ingleside Vineyards One of the oldest wineries in the state, Ingleside Vineyards is a Colonial Beach establishment with a European-style courtyard where you can sit and sip wine while mingling with others or enjoying special events such as concerts. Furthermore, guests report the staff is very well-informed about the wines offered, and adds personal touches to each tasting session to make it interesting and interactive. Good Luck Cellars This Kilmarnock business entices visitors to drink wine in a laid-back setting on Fridays by giving them the chance to bring their own dinners and pair them with wines on the property's porch. Some of the products from this winery come from grapes that aren't widely grown in Virginia, allowing you to have somewhat of an exotic tasting experience here if desired. Although Virginia lacks a professional sports franchise, that doesn't mean that it lacks exceptional sporting events. Each year, these sports attract millions of visitors from all around the country. With tons of college sports, minor league affiliates, and other miscellaneous sports, Virginia has it all. Here are some of the Virginia sporting events you can't afford to miss. 1. The Commonwealth Cup Each year, the football teams of Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia clash in what's known as the Commonwealth Cup. While the teams first met on the gridiron in 1895, the modern rivalry game didn't become an annual event until 1970. However, this fierce battle brings together fanatical supporters of both sides into a single maniacal venue. Taking place at Richmond International Raceway each September, the race is all the more exciting due to its importance in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. As the last regular season event, the Federated Auto Parts 400 is often a deciding factor in who wins the championship. Last year, over 3.1 million people tuned in to watch the excitement, when Matt Kenseth took home the hardware. Don't miss out on this one-of-a-kind event. 4. Twilight Polo Unless you're a polo enthusiast, the closest you've probably been to watching a game is wearing a Ralph Lauren shirt. However, this bizarre, yet intriguing sport is way more entertaining than you think. On Saturdays from May to September, the outdoor arena in The Plains, Virginia, holds Twilight Polo, featuring three games from 6 p.m. until they finish. To make matters more interesting, Twilight Polo event themes include Pirate Night, Disco Night, and Star Wars Night. Prices are per carload and are $35 before the event or $40 at the gate. Traditionally done by propelling oneself through the water with the arms while kneeling or lying on a floating platform, paddle boarding is popular with people of all ages and ability levels. Many people also try standup paddle boarding, which is similar but requires using a canoe paddle to move. Chesapeake, Va. is a prime spot for paddle boarding, and there are several good places to try your hand at this activity or develop existing skills. 1. Pohick Bay Regional Park Located in Lorton, Va., this is the only public park in the state that rents paddle boards, so if you don't have your own gear and aren't working with a third-party company to get rental equipment, this pick is an especially handy option. Rent your paddle board by the hour, and enjoy slightly lower rates if you live nearby. Even if you're not from the area, the rental prices are still very reasonable. more 2. Kiptopeke State Park Situated three miles north of the Cape Charles Toll Plaza at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, this state park offers a fishing pier, boat ramp, and even a hawk observatory besides its paddle boarding opportunities. Visitors rave about the lovely sunset views, so be sure to stay until sundown if you can. You may want to extend your trip even further, especially since this state park has spacious campsites. You'll need to have your own paddleboarding gear, though, due to the unfortunate absence of rental facilities here. 3. The Inn at Tabbs Creek Maybe you're feeling very timid about paddleboarding and would prefer to begin trying it in a very calm, secluded area. If so, head to The Inn at Tabbs Creek. Guests get the hang of things on the private property, then venture out onto the nearby East River once they feel more confident in their abilities. If you don't have your own gear, arrange to have rental equipment delivered from Chesapeake Bay Paddling Company. There are a total of 18 places from which people can launch their paddle boards in Mathews County, where this property is located. 4. Mantra Fit Some people realized they'd love the chance to combine their daily workouts with paddleboard excursions and receive instruction from fitness experts. That's all possible if you go to Mantra Fit, a company in Severna Park, Md. Although this option requires venturing out from Chesapeake a bit, it may be worth it if you'd like to get some good-quality guidance while honing your paddle boarding prowess. Classes take place on the Magothy River at Fairways Marina, and Nabbs Creek Marina, on the Patapsco River. In addition to offering paddle board rentals, Mantra Fit often gives interested people the chance to experience paddle boarding for free by attending demonstrations. Plus, you get to see an entirely different view of the area from the water, and maybe you will even see some wildlife. That said, where do you go kayaking? Check out these five best places to go kayaking near Chesapeake — they won't disappoint Buckroe Beach and Park On First Street South in Hampton, Virginia, you will find Buckroe Beach and Park. This is a great place to take your kayak out on the water while looking back at the white, sandy shore. This park is rarely crowded, and it offers a beautiful picnic area, a place for kids to play, and restrooms. However, do not bring your furry friends with you, as pets are not welcome. more Sandy Bottom Nature Park Sandy Bottom Nature Park, also in Hampton, offers a perfect place for kayakers to spend a few hours. While you are in the water, keep watching for wildlife, as it is likely you'll see turtles and other animals. However, if you don't see anything while paddling, stop by the visitors' center and check out some snakes. If you want to make a weekend of it, stay at the campground. Off of Indian River Road in Virginia Beach, you will find Stumpy Lake and their relatively new kayak launch. Although you are in the city, it feels as if you are miles away from it all. Here kayakers enjoy exploring the calm, fresh water and watching for wildlife. You don't have to worry about any motorized boats creating waves, as only non-motorized boats are allowed. Chesapeake Bay One of the greatest treasures in Virginia is the Chesapeake Bay. Not only is this area filled with a distinguished history, but visitors are often treated with views of swimming dolphins. You can make this experience even better by taking your kayak out into the bay in hopes to catch a glimpse of the dolphins. Watch for other wildlife as well, because this area of the world has many interesting animals to see. Hoffler Creek Wildlife Preserve Another excellent area to kayak as well as to see some wildlife is the Hoffler Creek Wildlife Preserve in Portsmouth, Virginia. Here you can rent a kayak if you don't own one, and explore a new and exciting world of kayaking. Wooded areas surround the place and it is home to many animals. Expect to see many water birds. The 2016 Chesapeake Jubilee officially kicks off Thursday, May 19th at Chesapeake City Park. The Jubilee will again host the Chesapeake Kiwanis Club Shrimp Feast and the BBQ Cook-off Competition, sanctioned by the world famous Kansas City Barbeque Society. The music lineup for the Jubilee this year has a little for everyone! Friday night’s main act is Black White Blues w/ Girls Night Out on the main stage. Chesapeake Golf Club Just east of the Elizabeth River on Clubhouse Drive you will find the locals' favorite golf course — Chesapeake Golf Club. This course offers many challenging legs, including various water features and sand traps. There are two clubhouses along the way, so you can stop in for a break to eat, get a drink, or just escape the sun for a few minutes. This is a semi-private club that allows both memberships and public play. Oh, and don't forget to book your next event here, because the pool and clubhouse offer an excellent venue for any event. more Battlefield Golf Club at Centerville If you are looking for an exciting and challenging golf course, you need to check out one of the newest in the area. The Battlefield Golf Club at Centerville features 18 fairways with rolling hills, bunkers, varying terrain, and several water features. With elevation changes of 35 to 40 feet, you will be kept on your toes and constantly have to adjust your game. Rates start at $12 for juniors and $20 for adults. Stop by or call ahead for a tee time. Cahoon Plantation The longest distance between tees in the area is found at Cahoon Plantation. This course features a course of 18 holes with 7,141 yards and a score of 72 for par. There is bentgrass all through this course, making it a great place to play year-round. Golfers find this course is well-maintained and attracts a friendly and welcoming crowd. The clubhouse is beautiful and offers a great restaurant and pro shop. Greenbrier Country Club The Greenbrier Country Club is both challenging and convenient. It is located on Volvo Parkway in a lovely residential community. Although some of the homes are close to the fairways, they aren't so close that you will worry about hitting them. The restaurant offers outstanding food so that even if you are not interested in playing golf, you should at least stop by for a meal. Also, if you just need a little practice, they do offer an excellent-sized driving range where you can work on your swing. Cypress Point Not far away in Virginia Beach, there is Cypress Point, a must-visit golf course. This semi-private course offers one of the prettiest places to play a round of golf in the area. It is challenging and features hills, sand traps, and waterways. Additionally, you will find a pool, casual, and formal dining, and a great atmosphere to host a wedding or other special event. Throughout the year, there are an array of festivals in Chesapeake, Virginia. These festivals range from food-focused events to crafts, music, and more. With such a vast diversity, it is easy to say there is a festival for everyone. Therefore, which ones do you plan on visiting? The following five are the greatest festivals to attend. Revolutionary Beer Fest Start the summer off right by going to the Revolutionary Beer Fest on June 11, 2016. Grab your adult friends and head over to Chesapeake City Park, where you will find more than 15 breweries serving beer and pairing with local food trucks. This adult-only event starts at noon and goes until 5 p.m. Tickets start at $35, but for $75, you can get the VIP ticket that includes dinner and exclusive beer tasting. more Celebration Freedom Everyone loves a big Fourth of July party, and you need to go to the Celebration Freedom event to experience it. However, this year, the party starts on July 3, 2016, at the Chesapeake City Park. This festival includes entertainment, music, children's activities, and more. Then end the night by watching the fireworks explode in the sky above. There is no entry fee, but parking in the area is $5. Symphony Under the Stars The Symphony Under the Stars is a local tradition here in Chesapeake. This year Bagley Stage, the Virginia Symphony Orchestra will be performing on Sept. 4, 2016. The area opens at 6 p.m. with food vendors and silent auctions to visit. The concert starts at 7 p.m., so be sure you bring your blanket or lawn chairs and find a spot before the show starts. This event is completely free, and there is no charge for parking. Great American Food Fest Before you know it, October 5 will be here and so will the Great American Food Fest. From 3-7 p.m. come on down to Chesapeake City Park, where you will find one of Chesapeake's largest outdoor events. For just $30 in advance or $40 at the door, you can try a variety of great food, including clam chowder, barbecue, fried fish, and more. Plus, you can pick from several craft beer or mixed drink options. Waterways Heritage Days Every year during the second weekend of October, you can come out to the two-day event celebrating Waterways Heritage Days. This event takes place at several locations, including Great Bridge Lock Park and Historic Battlefield Park. Here you will find several exhibits detailing the wonderful history of the area. Vendors bring crafts, food, and more to showcase their talents, as well as share a part of history with you. This event is free, and there are shuttles available to transport you to and from the different sites. Now that you know why these festivals are the greatest, it is time that you plan to attend one or more of them. Handsome Biscuit If you are looking for a unique place for brunch, try the Handsome Biscuit. Located on Colonial Avenue, this restaurant has a menu like no other. For example, one of the favorite items you can order is the Hella Fitzgerald. This meal consists of fried chicken, bacon, and cheddar cheese all on a biscuit and smothered in spicy gravy. Alternatively, there are several other breakfast sandwiches that all come in a sweet potato biscuit. Although there are many tables outside, there are only a few tables inside, so plan accordingly if it is cold or rainy.
