The Third Most Populous City According to census estimates as of 2015, Chesapeake has a population of 235,429 people, making it the third most populous city in the state. It trails only Virginia Beach and Norfolk in terms of population. Surprisingly, it's actually larger than Virginia's capital and most iconic city: Richmond. more 2. Animal Burials Perhaps one of the more bizarre facts about Chesapeake is that it's actually the burial place of dead animals from the Virginia Zoo in neighboring Norfolk. The burial ground is on the grounds of a tree farm within in the city, although the exact location is under wraps to prevent the theft of skulls and other precious animal parts like ivory. 3. The Crater In 1983, scientists discovered a mammoth 53-mile wide crater in Chesapeake Bay, within miles of the city limits. Estimates pinpoint the crater's age to 35 million years, and the impact, if it occurred today, would cause mass extinction including plant and animal life. Scientists also claim that the initial collision would have killed everything living thing within a 100-mile radius. 4. The Sister City To promote cultural and commercial ties, many cities around the world have a sister city. Chesapeake's is Joinville, Brazil. Located in southern Brazil in the Santa Catarina State, Joinville is a rare sight in the South American country because of its distinct German heritage. It's also regarded as one of the richest cities on the continent. 5. Bigger Than You Think Although Chesapeake is by no means one of the largest cities in the country per population, it's actually the 11th biggest in area. The city encompasses 353 square miles with over 100,000 people, making it one of the least densely populated cities in the country. 6. Don't Use Foul Language While profanity isn't acceptable in any public setting, it will actually get you into legal trouble in Chesapeake. As late as 2012, people have been charged with using profane, threatening, or indecent language over public airwaves. If you ever get heated about a political debate on talk radio, make sure you don't have a slip of the tongue if you decide to call in. 7. Super Safe and Great to Live Based on statistics of violent crime compiled by the FBI, Chesapeake is the fifth safest city in the country, meaning you won't have to worry about forgetting to lock the door to run a quick errand. A great activity for summer is kayaking. It gets you out on the water and into the fresh air. Plus, you get to see an entirely different view of the area from the water, and maybe you will even see some wildlife. That said, where do you go kayaking? Check out these five best places to go kayaking near Chesapeake — they won't disappoint Buckroe Beach and Park On First Street South in Hampton, Virginia, you will find Buckroe Beach and Park. This is a great place to take your kayak out on the water while looking back at the white, sandy shore. This park is rarely crowded, and it offers a beautiful picnic area, a place for kids to play, and restrooms. However, do not bring your furry friends with you, as pets are not welcome. more Sandy Bottom Nature Park Sandy Bottom Nature Park, also in Hampton, offers a perfect place for kayakers to spend a few hours. Chesapeake Bay One of the greatest treasures in Virginia is the Chesapeake Bay. Not only is this area filled with a distinguished history, but visitors are often treated with views of swimming dolphins. Watch for other wildlife as well, because this area of the world has many interesting animals to see. Hoffler Creek Wildlife Preserve Another excellent area to kayak as well as to see some wildlife is the Hoffler Creek Wildlife Preserve in Portsmouth, Virginia. Here you can rent a kayak if you don't own one, and explore a new and exciting world of kayaking. Wooded areas surround the place and it is home to many animals. Expect to see many water birds. The 2016 Chesapeake Jubilee officially kicks off Thursday, May 19th at Chesapeake City Park. The Jubilee will again host the Chesapeake Kiwanis Club Shrimp Feast and the BBQ Cook-off Competition, sanctioned by the world famous Kansas City Barbeque Society. The music lineup for the Jubilee this year has a little for everyone! Friday night’s main act is Black White Blues w/ Girls Night Out on the main stage. Throughout the year, there are an array of festivals in Chesapeake, Virginia. These festivals range from food-focused events to crafts, music, and more. With such a vast diversity, it is easy to say there is a festival for everyone. Therefore, which ones do you plan on visiting? The following five are the greatest festivals to attend. Revolutionary Beer Fest Start the summer off right by going to the Revolutionary Beer Fest on June 11, 2016. Grab your adult friends and head over to Chesapeake City Park, where you will find more than 15 breweries serving beer and pairing with local food trucks. This adult-only event starts at noon and goes until 5 p.m. Tickets start at $35, but for $75, you can get the VIP ticket that includes dinner and exclusive beer tasting. more Celebration Freedom Everyone loves a big Fourth of July party, and you need to go to the Celebration Freedom event to experience it. However, this year, the party starts on July 3, 2016, at the Chesapeake City Park. This festival includes entertainment, music, children's activities, and more. Then end the night by watching the fireworks explode in the sky above. There is no entry fee, but parking in the area is $5. Symphony Under the Stars The Symphony Under the Stars is a local tradition here in Chesapeake. This year Bagley Stage, the Virginia Symphony Orchestra will be performing on Sept. 4, 2016. The area opens at 6 p.m. with food vendors and silent auctions to visit. The concert starts at 7 p.m., so be sure you bring your blanket or lawn chairs and find a spot before the show starts. This event is completely free, and there is no charge for parking. Great American Food Fest Before you know it, October 5 will be here and so will the Great American Food Fest. From 3-7 p.m. come on down to Chesapeake City Park, where you will find one of Chesapeake's largest outdoor events. For just $30 in advance or $40 at the door, you can try a variety of great food, including clam chowder, barbecue, fried fish, and more. Plus, you can pick from several craft beer or mixed drink options. Waterways Heritage Days Every year during the second weekend of October, you can come out to the two-day event celebrating Waterways Heritage Days. This event takes place at several locations, including Great Bridge Lock Park and Historic Battlefield Park. Here you will find several exhibits detailing the wonderful history of the area. Vendors bring crafts, food, and more to showcase their talents, as well as share a part of history with you. This event is free, and there are shuttles available to transport you to and from the different sites. Now that you know why these festivals are the greatest, it is time that you plan to attend one or more of them. You can read reviews, hear from friends, or even see things on the news about each of these, but until you experience them yourself, you won't truly know how great they are. With spring approaching, chances are you're probably champing at the bit to get outside and do something exciting. Fortunately, Norfolk gives you the opportunity to do just that. The city hosts numerous festivals in the spring months, complete with great food, drink, and live entertainment. If you're looking for a fun-filled outdoor atmosphere, head to these Norfolk festivals this spring. LanternAsia Located on the grounds of the Norfolk Botanical Garden, LanternAsia is a festival unlike any other in the area. Throughout the park, there are over 30 giant works of Asian lantern art that become illuminated during the evening. It's not easy to describe just how spectacular the scenery is, but it's sure to please people of all ages. LanternAsia runs through the end of April from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children 17 and under. more Virginia Beer Festival For the avid beer enthusiast, the Virginia Beer Festival will feel like Christmas. Voted as one of the Best Beer Festivals in the country by USA Today, the Virginia Beer Festival features samples of stouts, ales, and lagers from over 125 local and national brewers. This year's entertainment is courtesy of Buckshot, a local country-rock outfit from nearby Virginia Beach. General admission to the event is $15, but a $30 tasting ticket gets you some samples and a souvenir glass. Upgrade to premium admission for $75 to get food and private bathrooms. This event takes place in late May each year. Bayou Boogaloo Norfolk isn't exactly known as a hotbed of Cajun influence, but the Bayou Boogaloo will make you feel like you're right in New Orleans. Taking place in June, right on the cusp between spring and summer, the Bayou Boogaloo features authentic food from actual New Orleans-based chefs. Dishes include jambalaya, etoufee, and gumbo. Don't miss the massive seafood boil, which contains over 8,000 pounds of fresh Louisiana crawfish. There's live music throughout the weekend featuring zydeco, blues, and country music, as well as art on display and for sale from prominent New Orleans artists. Tickets to the event are between $15 and $30. Puppy de Mayo Do you find it difficult to leave your pooch at home, even if only for a few minutes? If this describes you, then your attendance at the Puppy de Mayo is essentially mandatory. Taking place on May 5, this free event invites dog lovers to enjoy a few adult beverages while sharing their love of everything canine. At the end of the event, the "Best Dressed Dog" receives an award, so don't forget to put a costume on your mutt. In addition, the event offers free treats and snacks for all attendees (dogs, that is). Several vendors will also provide dog-friendly services throughout the event for only a small fee. Instead of going stir crazy in your home wondering how you're going to spend your weekend, remember that the festival season nears. If you're an avid outdoorsman or just love a casual hike, there's nothing more exciting than finding the next new trail to blaze. One great place to look is Norfolk, Virginia. Although it's not known as a hotspot for hikers, it has a surprising amount of trails that provide good exercise and amazing scenery. The next time you get an itch to go hiking, head to these Norfolk area trails. Elizabeth River Trail - Atlantic City Spur Although this trail doesn't take you through tons of remote wilderness, the Elizabeth River Trail offers 9.5 miles of paved walkways that wind their way along the Elizabeth River. Along the way, you'll get to see some of the local maritime wildlife including ducks, seagulls, cormorants, and skimmers. The trail is easily traversable for people of all fitness levels, including children. more Hoffler Creek Wildlife Preserve Just a short drive from Norfolk, you'll find Hoffler Creek Wildlife Preserve, which offers hiking and kayaking. The trail is easy and spans only 1.8 miles as it encircles Lake Ballard, and it is full of local wildlife. Some of the creatures you'll encounter are raccoons, eagles, deer, woodpeckers, and pelicans. The preserve is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cape Henry Trail The Cape Henry Trail in nearby Virginia Beach offers 7.5 miles of paved trail for you to explore. Throughout the journey, you'll work your way through heavily forested areas, giving you a first-hand look at their enormous size and grandeur. Wildlife on the trail includes ospreys, foxes, deer, and great blue herons. If you don't want to hike the length of the trail, there are numerous exits into urban areas that feature shops and restaurants. Indian River Park Trail As the name would imply, the Indian River Park Trail curves along the banks of the Indian River. Unlike other trails in the area, however, this one offers steeper inclines that make it a more brisk hike; still, many with weaker fitness levels can still traverse it with a few breaks. If you want the ultimate challenge, hike one of the many BMX ramps throughout the park. Most of these ramps, used for stunts by BMX bikers, provide a challenge as they rise to almost eight feet in the air. If that doesn't sound like fun, just stick to the rest of the 1.6-mile loop. Osmanthus Trail The Osmanthus Trail is a must-do hike in Norfolk for many reasons. Perhaps the most exciting aspect is that it's full of local wildflowers that bloom throughout the year. Aside from this awesome view, there are also chances to learn about some of the foliage that's indigenous to the area. The loop itself stretches 3.2 miles, and the terrain changes from flat to steep, making it somewhat of a challenge. Dogs are also allowed on the Osmanthus Trail, although they must have a leash. Although Norfolk isn't known for the most beautiful hikes in the country, it does have some great opportunities if you know where to look. The recently renovated Children's Museum of Virginia is the perfect solution for a rainy day or when you'd rather spend time inside. It includes 12,000 square feet of expanded space with plenty of please touch exhibits and activities that make learning more fun. Cloud 9 Trampoline Park is also a local favorite, where kids can exert some of their energy in a fun and exciting way. If you have a builder in your family, take him or her to BRICKHEADZ Build, Play & Party Center for some creative fun. Chesapeake Planetarium Kids and adults can learn more about the wonders of our universe at Chesapeake Planetarium. It sits within the Chesapeake Municipal Center on Shea Drive. The planetarium was the first of its kind built by a local public school system within Virginia, and it now offers free exhibits and public programs to visitors. You can even take a look through a telescope and observe the surrounding stars, moon, and planets. Fun Forest One of the top outdoor attractions in Chesapeake is the Fun Forest, which sits on 3 acres within a city park. More than 1,800 volunteers participated in building the area, which is home to a family adventure park, expansive children's playground, and imagination center. The year after it opened, it received the Best New Facility award in the state of Virginia. Additionally, the playground has separate areas for older kids, where activities are more challenging and help them develop skills. Toddlers can play on the smaller swings and slides or practice steering a truck or a plane. Be sure to spend some time at the Children's Fossil Dig if you have a budding paleontologist in your family. Gum Tree Farm Animal lovers will enjoy spending the day at Gum Tree Farm, home to cats, dogs, a donkey, a rabbit, a horse, chickens, turkeys, ducks, sheep, and a baby pig. Families can watch demonstrations of wool dyeing, and learn more about farm life on the 50-acre property. Visitors can also check out local art galleries. Historic Sites Colonial settlers arrived in Chesapeake nearly four centuries ago, in 1620. It made history when it became the site for the Battle of the Great Bridge, which occurred in 1775. Now, visitors can learn more about the history of the area by visiting the various historical sites. Battlefield Park is located on Historic Way and is a tribute to the famous battle. Its grounds include a recreation of the causeway from when the battle occurred, along with picnic areas and an outdoor auditorium. The Chesapeake 9/11 Memorial also pays tribute to those who lost their lives in the tragic terrorist attack. Dining When you go on vacation to Chesapeake, be sure to plan on eating well while you are in town. It is also one of the largest Navy ships and is now on display at The Hampton Roads Naval Museum. While a guided Topside tour of the ship does cost a small fee, you can take a self-guided tour for free to learn more about this piece of naval history. It includes statistics, photos, and exhibits designed to educate people of all ages about its role in various military excursions. Oak Grove Lake Park If the weather outside is nice, you will find that parks tend to get more crowded with locals who want to take advantage of the sunshine. However, don't let that deter you from visiting Oak Grove Lake Park, an outdoor recreation area with an observation platform that gives beautiful views of the surrounding water. You can also fish off the dock, take a hike on the 1.5-mile trail, and let your kids play on the playground equipment. Picnic shelters also provide space to enjoy lunch or dinner outside. First Landing State Park Virginia Beach is less than a half hour from Chesapeake, so a trip to this area is always a favorite for visitors. It includes more than 18,000 acres of national parks, along with a wildlife refuge. The leading destination in this area is First Landing State Park, where you can participate in monthly educational programs to learn more about animal tracking, hiking, surf fishing, and more. You can also rent bikes for a small fee and take in the sights firsthand. The park is also home to a number of endangered species and migratory birds, along with pigs, wild horses, and other animal life. Battlefield Park This park is the site of the Battle of the Great Bridge, which took place in 1775. Free tours with a docent are available by appointment, where visitors can learn more about the history of the site. Other attractions include an interpretive historic pathway, family picnic area, and an outdoor auditorium. Early in 2007, members of The Daughters of the American Revolution aided in bringing a stone monument into the park that paid tribute to soldiers who fought in the battle. You can see this large monument from the Intracoastal Waterway as well as from the street. No matter what you are looking for during your trip to Chesapeake, you can find it in this culturally rich and historically interesting destination.
