The 2019 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) wrapped up on Jan. 27 after two weeks of exciting vehicle showcases and reveals. Among the big news to come out of this year's edition of the event was Toyota's announcement that it's re-releasing a beloved model. Read on to learn about it and more from the Detroit Auto Show. Manufacturers Are Reviving Discontinued Models Was your favorite car discontinued years or even decades ago? Don't wax nostalgic; several manufacturers revealed they're resurrecting bygone models in the coming year. Headlining this announcement is the sporty 2020 Toyota Supra, which stopped being sold in the United States in 1998. Other models making comebacks include the Ford Ranger and Ford Bronco SUV, the Jeep Gladiator pickup, the Honda Passport SUV, and the Chevy Blazer. more These recognizable names create buzz among potential buyers that fondly recall them from previous generations. Car companies don't have to market them as aggressively because they're still top of mind. The Return of the Toyota Supra Toyota officially announced the highly anticipated launch of the 2020 Supra for the summer of 2019. This limited-production, two-seater packs a powerful punch with its 3.0-liter, turbocharged, inline-six engine à la BMW. It produces 335 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque and features an eight-speed automatic transmission with available paddle shifters. Rumor has it that this edition of the Supra can go from zero to 60 in just 4.1 seconds, capping out at 155 mph. With its relaunch, Toyota is targeting the Generation X market that fell in love with the Supra in the 1980s and '90s. Toyota will release three Supra trims in eight color options at a starting price of around $50,000. It will release 1,500 units of the highest trim, the Launch Edition, first, which retails at $56,180. Notable features include an eye-catching LED headlight configuration, a "double bubble" roof to make it aerodynamic without sacrificing interior space, and your choice of racing-inspired, body-hugging sport seats or luxurious premium leather. The Auto Show Moves to June in 2020 One of the biggest announcements at the Auto Show was from the NAIAS itself. In 2020, the show is moving its traditional January dates to the summer, starting the week of June 8. The reasoning behind this switch? It will allow the show and the car manufacturers exhibiting there to offer more opportunities for companies and attendees alike. Rather than being confined within the Cobo Center's walls, the show can take advantage of seasonal weather to expand outside as well as to other venues throughout the city. New outdoor activities might include test rides and drives, off-road challenges, automated driving demonstrations, and vehicle debuts. The auto show will also come on the heels of the Detroit Grand Prix, with the potential to create a nearly month-long, festival-like event for car enthusiasts. Wine samples are available until 4:30 p.m. All the varieties you'll find for tasting can be purchased on site by the bottle or by the case so find a favorite and stock up. more Four ticket packages are available from general admission on up to Boater packages for those who want to enjoy the day on the water. If you want to sample the vino, be sure you buy the Tasting Ticket or higher, as general admission passes don't include tasting privileges. Consider Reserve Table Seating if you're attending with a group of friends. Virginia Beach Taco Festival What better way to spend your Cinco de Mayo than at a Taco Festival? You'll find amazing food, margaritas, and live music in Virginia Beach. Along with more than 15 restaurants and food trucks, you'll find tons of fun games and activities like a tequila tasting, pepper eating contests, and a kids zone. General admission tickets start at $9.99, but if you really want to experience Cinco de Mayo in first class, go for the VIP ticket to get access to lots of goodies, full-size food samples, and private bathrooms. The Virginia Beach Taco Festival has something for everyone. Virginia Arts Festival If you're looking for something different on Cinco de Mayo, check out a performance of Dance Theatre of Harlem as part of the Virginia Arts Festival. The ballet by Claudia Schreier features 12 dancers and depicts the historical arrival of the first known Africans to North America in 1619. The plot also describes the recruitment of the first English women to the new world. Three shows are available, one each on May 3, May 4, and May 5, all at Chrysler Hall in Norfolk. This year's events will be extra special as Dance Theatre of Harlem celebrates 50 years of delighting audiences. The Toyota RAV4 is one of the best-selling sport utility vehicles (SUVs) in the country and a jewel in the manufacturer's lineup. It's the top seller in a family of high performing vehicles for Toyota. With all that success, you may be surprised to learn that the 2019 model features a complete redesign. What's New? The changes start with the foundation of the SUV. Toyota's New Global Architecture is at the heart of the 2019 RAV4 and brings new suspension to improve the handling and reduce body roll. The interior cabin is improved over the previous model with soft upholstery on the dash and armrest. A great deal of variety is available depending on the trim package you select. more Across the board, you get more room for passengers as well as cargo in the 2019 model. The driver and all passengers get more shoulder room, while rear passengers also have more head and leg room. The cargo area is longer in the 2019 model while cargo volume stays about the same. The vehicle sits lower to the ground than previous models, but ground clearance is increased by up to 2.3 inches. Multi-Terrain Select lets you select the type of roads your trip will take you over, such as muddy, snowy, or rocky roads. Gasoline and Hybrid Models This fifth generation of the RAV4 is available in a hybrid model in addition to the gasoline engine. Nine packages are available in the gasoline model: The RAV4 LE is available in FWD and AWD The XLE is also available in FWD and AWD The RAV4 Adventure comes in AWD only and is equipped to tow up to 3,500 pounds The XLE Premium comes in FWD and AWD The Limited comes in FWD and AWD All models have a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The 2019 RAV4 gets up to 29 mpg in all models except the Adventure, which gets 27 mpg. Advanced Technology Perhaps the most significant change from the 2018 model RAV4 is in the technology. The 2018 model featured pre-collision warnings, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise, lane departure monitoring, and automatic high beams. All of these perks are back in the 2019 model, but you also get road sign assist and lane keeping assist as part of this generation of the Toyota Safety Sense technology suite (TSS). The newest version of the Entune 3.0 infotainment system includes WiFi via Verizon, Amazon Alexa, and Apple CarPlay. The navigation system on the 2019 model is either 7 or 8 inches, depending on the model. For your convenience, the 2019 RAV4 has five USB ports to accommodate all your devices and those of your passengers. If that's not enough, a Qi wireless smartphone charger is available as well. The 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show was a big event for Toyota. This year, the auto manufacturer debuted plans for five new cars: the 2020 Corolla, 2019 Prius AWD-e, 2020 Avalon TRD, 2020 Camry TRD, and 2019 RAV4. Here's a recap of everything you missed from this event and when you can expect some of these new models to roll into our dealership. 2020 Corolla As the best-selling car of all time, the Corolla has pretty high standards to maintain. Luckily, it looks like the 2020 Corolla will continue to solidify the model's place in history thanks to its Toyota New Generation Architecture platform. The Corolla will also finally see its first hybrid variant, allowing drivers to be more conscious of their environmental footprint. A new 2.0-liter four-cylinder gas engine is also available in the XSE and SE trims for better efficiency and power. more 2019 Prius AWD-e While the Prius has been dominating the market for years, it's always been missing one crucial component — all-wheel drive. That's all about to change with the release of the 2019 Prius AWD-e, which uses an independent electric rear motor to push the back wheels from 0 to 6 mph. If more assistance is needed on rough or slippery terrains, the system will kick back on and assist up to speeds of 43 mph. 2020 Avalon TRD and 2020 Camry TRD TRD stands for Toyota Racing Development, which should give you a pretty good idea of what these new Avalon and Camry models will look like. The new Avalon model is based on the Avalon XSE trim, while the Camry model is based on the Camry SE trim. Both will feature a number of sporty features, including matte-black 19-inch alloy wheels, a track-tuned chassis upgrade, and a unique TRD interior trim. In addition to the above-mentioned add-ons, the engines of both cars will come with a cat-back dual exhaust system to produce a familiar throaty growl. Both of these trims will be limited edition, so snag one right away if you're interested. 2019 RAV4 One of the most exciting updates from Toyota is the all-new RAV4, which marks the fifth generation of the popular crossover. In all, you'll have the choice of 13 total trims to choose from: four front-wheel-drive models, four all-wheel-drive hybrid models, and five all-wheel-drive gasoline models. On the outside, the SUV will appear much sportier than previous iterations. Once you step inside the car, you'll see a wide array of technology that will appease even the most persnickety of modern drivers. As for when you can expect these great vehicles to be available on our lot, the Prius should arrive in January, the Corolla should arrive in spring, and the Camry and the Avalon should arrive in fall 2019. Gas versions of the RAV4 are already available, and the hybrid model will be available in March 2019. Self-Guided Tree Walk The trails at the Arboretum feature a wide variety of tree species. You can learn all about each of them when you go on a springtime self-guided tree walk. Each of the species has a label to make it easy to identify them, and you can even get a brochure at the information kiosk with more information. In the spring, the Stewartia grove fills with beautiful color as the flowers bloom and is a sight that's well worth the walk. more Use one of the trail maps to help decide which way you want to go. You can choose just one path or make an afternoon of it and explore them all. The Caleb Williamson Farmhouse History buffs will enjoy stopping at the Caleb Williamson Farmhouse during a trip to the Arboretum. This 18th-century house was the home of the Williamson family, who started the Arboretum. Just a few yards down the road across the street, you can also visit the Williamson family cemetery. Step Into Spring The Step Into Spring program at the Arboretum is a program for kids between the ages of 5 and 12. The two-hour program teaches them all about the signs of spring and how to look for it. The kids along with their instructor will explore some of the trails in the forest looking for signs of nature returning to life. Rent the Pecan Grove Gazebo You can plan your own spring event at the Arboretum. The Pecan Grove Gazebo is available for any type of gathering, whether it's a wedding or family get together. Beautifully manicured gardens surround the gazebo with plenty of mature trees for shade making a beautiful backdrop for your event. The spot sits right off Battlefield Boulevard for easy access and will accommodate up to 75 guests. The gazebo features a tongue and groove wood ceiling and a green tin roof. There are lights if you want an evening event, and there's also a ceiling fan and power. You can also use the 30 white chairs with a rental fee. Children's Programs The Arboretum is the training area for the local Urban Forestry group, and there are several recreational activities available throughout the year. For years, the RAV4 has excelled to the top of its compact crossover class, providing drivers with an affordable and convenient vehicle for carting passengers or cargo around town. Then, back in 2015, Toyota decided to up the ante by transforming the reliable RAV4 into a hybrid crossover that saw better gas mileage. This year, the well-known hybrid variant been completely redesigned for game-changing results. Here is everything you need to know about the 2019 RAV4 Hybrid. Power Paired With Efficiency Just because the RAV4 Hybrid is an efficient car doesn't mean it sacrifices power. In fact, the new model will be equipped with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that outputs 176 horsepower and 163 pound-feet of torque. There's also an electric motor that sends separate energy to both the front and back wheels. The front wheels get 118 horsepower and 149 pound-feet of torque, while the back wheels receive 54 horsepower and 89 pound-feet of torque. more Altogether, both the units offer a combined 219 horsepower, which greatly exceeds the previous RAV4 Hybrid's 194 horsepower. It's also better than the normal 2019 RAV4's 203 horsepower, meaning this hybrid is truly a vehicle that doesn't sacrifice power for efficiency. Fuel Economy and Performance So just how efficient is the new RAV4 Hybrid? Estimates provided by Toyota show the new vehicle should get 41 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway, both of which are improvements over 2018 ratings. But what if you wanted to put fuel economy aside and put the pedal to the metal? Luckily, the RAV4 Hybrid will have no problem keeping up, as it can zoom from 0 to 60 mph in just 7.5 seconds. It can also race a quarter of a mile in just 15.6 seconds, with a top speed of 90.4 mph in that stretch. No Lack of Space In many hybrid SUVs, interior space is compromised because the electric motor takes up so much space. Luckily, this isn't true in the RAV4 Hybrid, which offers a capacious 37.6-cubic-feet cargo hold behind the second row of seats. With all the seats in their upright position, the vehicle can comfortably seat up to five people. If you'd like a little more room for baggage or groceries, simply fold the back seats flat to increase the storage capacity. Safety Reigns Supreme Safety is a big selling point for Toyota, which is why they've opted to include the full Toyota Safety Sense suite of features in this hybrid. With this package, you'll get numerous advanced safety features, such as road-sign assist, lane-tracing assist, automatic high beams, lane-departure alert with steering assist, adaptive cruise control, and pre-collision warning with pedestrian detection. If you choose a higher trim model, you'll get even more features added on, including rear cross-traffic braking and blind spot monitoring. If you're eager to step behind the wheel of the 2019 RAV4 Hybrid, you'll have to wait until March 2019 when it is released. The Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge spans a massive 45,000 acres across an area south of Chesapeake, Virginia, into North Carolina. Despite its unappealing name, the refuge is filled with activities that make the Great Dismal Swamp worth a visit. Hiking and Biking The Great Dismal Swamp offers multiple trails you can either use for hiking or biking. The Washington Ditch Trail is the most popular trail for hiking and biking. It is a 4.5-mile dirt road that goes to Lake Drummond where it then switches to a 0.75-mile boardwalk by the water. The Railroad Ditch Trail also runs to Lake Drummond, but from a different entrance point. This gravel road is 6 miles long and connects to a different set of boardwalks. There is also the Headquarters/Pine Trail, which loops around the headquarters building through a pine forest. more Auto Touring The Lake Drummond Wildlife Drive Auto Tour is a self-guided driving tour that starts at the Railroad Ditch entrance and ends at Lake Drummond. The tour costs $5 and requires a self-obtained permit you can get at the entrance gate. The drive takes you through the park and gives you the opportunity to spot wildlife and sites along the way. One site is the Lateral West Fire Scar, which is a scar left from a fire in 2011 that scorched 6,300 acres. The Lake Drummond area is the most popular section for bird watching, so have your binoculars ready. Wildlife Viewing The Great Dismal Swamp Wildlife Refuge is filled with wildlife that you may get a chance to see during your visit. While birding is usually easier, the mammals you can catch a glimpse of are deer, black bear, coyotes, or river otters. There are over 200 species of birds that inhabit the refuge and around 80 different types of butterflies. Fishing and Boating Lake Drummond is a popular area in the swamp for fishing and boating on this 3,000-acre lake. Boaters are required to get a self-serve permit for their boat at the entrance gate, and the lake has a 25-horsepower limit. Lake Drummond has a limited selection of fish species due to its pH levels. Fishermen can catch crappie, chain pickerel, yellow perch, and catfish, but the most populous species in the lake are longnose gar and bowfin. The lake is also a popular spot to kayak and canoe due to its shallow depth and picturesque tree-filled views. Hunting For those that enjoy hunting, the refuge has a select few days every year where hunting takes place. There is a whitetail deer hunt that spans 12 days and a six-day long American black bear hunt, both of which overlap. In order to hunt, you need a special refuge hunt permit and your normal state hunting license and tags. The Great Dismal Swamp is a great place for a day trip for outdoor enthusiasts of any kind.
