Outdoors | Priority Toyota Chesapeake in Chesapeake, VAIn a world where we spend more time than ever staring at screens, it’s nice to get outside once in a while. Escaping into nature and moving our bodies is good for us and can improve our mood as well as give us a new appreciation of the world around us. Conveniently located just a short 3-hour road trip away in Woodbridge, VA, there are plenty of fun outdoor activities to enjoy!

1. Kayak to Featherstone National Wildlife Refuge

Featherstone National Wildlife Refuge may be close to Woodbridge, but it feels a world away. That’s because it’s only accessible by non-motorized boat. Why not kayak to the refuge? You’ll enjoy a beautiful journey over Neabsco Creek.
Once you reach the reserve itself, there are stunning wetlands and woodlands to enjoy. You’re likely to spot a variety of wildlife, including ospreys, muskrats, beavers, woodpeckers, and a variety of waterfowl. Please note that there are no bathrooms or other facilities on the reserve. Be sure to bring plenty of water along to stay hydrated!

2. Take a Walk at Neabsco Regional Park

This 300-acre park includes a great variety of natural, recreational, and historic features. Taking a stroll along the pleasant boardwalk, winding through wetland, meadow, and woodland, is a great way to benefit from some light exercise while taking in the local scenery.
There are other points of interest in the park, including the Rippon Lodge Historic Site. An 18th-century plantation house, it’s open to visitors from May through October on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 11am to 4pm. It’s a great place to stop during your hike to learn more about the history of the local area.

3. Cycle Down the Anacostia River Trail

Just a 40-minute drive from Woodbridge, Anacostia River Trail is a perfect place to enjoy cycling. Running for more than 20 miles, it’s a smooth, asphalt trail taking in gorgeous views of the local area, including the RFK Stadium and Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens.
With its wide, well-maintained surface and plenty of parking nearby, this is an easily accessible place for those of all abilities.

4. Spend a Night Under the Stars at Oak Ridge Campground

There’s no better way to appreciate nature than camping. Enjoying the sounds and smells of the night air while toasting S’mores over a crackling campfire, singing songs, or telling stories with friends and family, it’s the perfect way of escaping the pressures of day-to-day life.
While there are plenty of great campsites in the area, one of the best might be Oak Ridge Campground. Just a half-hour drive from Woodbridge, it’s located in Prince William Forest Park. Each site is isolated and comes with its own picnic table and grill. The wooded surroundings, peaceful atmosphere, and nearby attractions make this one of the best places to camp in the area.

Any one of these delightful spots is sure to provide ample opportunity to revel at the beauty found in the great outdoors – so get out there and start enjoying the sunshine!
