2020 Toyota 4Runner | Priority Toyota Chesapeake in Chesapeake, VAThe 2020 Toyota 4Runner and the 2020 Toyota Avalon share several differences, aside from the type of vehicle each one is. While the 2020 4Runner is an SUV, the Avalon is a full-size sedan. There are more key differences between the two vehicles, and we cover these in this overview of the 2020 Toyota 4Runner versus the 2020 Toyota Avalon.

Trim Levels Available

One of the biggest differences between the 2020 Toyota 4Runner and Avalon is that the Avalon features a hybrid option for three of its eight trims: the XLE, XSE, and Limited hybrids. Both models feature eight trims to choose from and up to nine different custom colors for any of the models’ trims. Though if you’re looking for eco-friendly and electric capabilities, the Avalon may be the best choice of the two vehicles.

Engine Configuration

The 2020 Toyota 4Runner comes standard with a 4.0-liter V-6 engine that’s capable of producing 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. The engine couples with Toyota’s five-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission (ECT-i). This is the only engine configuration Toyota makes available for the 4Runner’s 2020 model inventory.

Unlike the 4Runner, the Avalon features two engine configurations: the standard 3.5-liter V-6 engine and the 2.5-liter inline-four-cylinder EVCT hybrid engine. Both pair with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Drivetrain, Suspension, and Capabilities

The Toyota 4Runner, like most SUVs, is a rear-wheel-drive vehicle with part-time four-wheel drive and traction control. This gives you the performance you need for navigating any driving condition. The Toyota Avalon, on the other hand, is a front-wheel-drive system, no matter the trim level you select.

The 4Runner, being an SUV, is well-equipped to handle off-road driving conditions. With off-road tech like the electronic locking rear differential system with Multi-Terrain Select and Crawl Control (CRAWL), Hill Start Assist Control (HAC), and Downhill Assist Control (DAC), the 4Runner is an excellent option if you need the capability for driving on rougher road conditions.

Since the Avalon is a luxury-style sedan, it doesn’t feature the same capabilities as the 4Runner. This doesn’t stop it from having a lot to offer, though! The Avalon’s strut and shock suspension system cushions your ride over bumpy roads, keeping you comfortable.

Available Tech and Connectivity Features

While many of the tech options for your infotainment suites are the same between models, the 2020 Avalon offers a little more when it comes to connectivity. With Toyota Remote Connect, you can control your Avalon right from your Apple Watch or other connectable smartwatches – the 4Runner doesn’t come with this feature. Both models support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, as well as Bluetooth capabilities and an array of USB ports throughout the vehicles for charging your devices on the go.

Each model can offer a range of standard and available features, along with the reliability and longevity Toyota is known for. Whether you need the power and towing capabilities of the 4Runner or prefer the sophisticated style of the Avalon, both models provide the innovation you’ll need in any driving situation!
